An AV rating is Martindale-Hubbell’s highest rating. The AV rating signifies an ethics rating of "very high" and a legal ability rating of "very high to preeminent." The BV rating signifies an ethics rating of "very high" and a legal ability rating of "high to very high."

Martindale-Hubbell is the facilitator of a peer review rating process. Ratings reflect the confidential opinions of members of the Bar and the judiciary. Martindale-Hubbell ratings fall into two categories - legal ability and general ethical standards.
